Paradise Lost
For the project Paradise Lost we have proposed a spacecraft for a speculative future where rejection of the once rapidly developing artificial intelligence leads to a re-emergence of a religious zealotism. Over the course of the history a tendency of a sequential withdrawal and attraction towards the spiritual can easily be observed and – with the latter slowly emerging nowadays – it is only natural to assume that it would happen again. Nature and earth, both soil and the planet, now deemed holy, are the privilege of a very few. Therefore most of the population embarks on crusade arks, aiming to consecrate a new Earth in place of the paradise lost; only the shadows whisper about who and at what price navigates the ship in place of the now-illegal AI.
An amalgam of different building types, from a sequence of spaces of an Egyptian temple, through a panopticon up to a metabolism capsule tower, results in a punk aesthetic that illustrates the cross section of an old-new, stratified social construct, where access is limited and information obscured. At the same time it is an attempt at designing a distinct, iconic silhouette.
